How To Make A Birdcage Lamp

You may have seen versions of this all over the internet, they are incredibly beautiful but also incredibly expensive, I saw one that was £500 just for the shade…WOW! So what I decided to do was, feed the kids this month and make my own ;o)

I started out with an old lamp with a large drum shade, first up was measuring the amount of wire mesh I needed, the mesh was from B & M stores

I simply wrapped the mesh around the shade and with wire cutters I  started to cut away what I didn’t need by following the lines of the shade

You may notice the little lengths of wire left need this, its that bit of wire that your going to wrap around your frame to secure your mesh in place, now you have your mesh cut to size, you can start to remove the surface off your old lampshade, you’ll be left with 2 wire circles, now its all about joining the 2 circles together

With the longer lengths of wire just start to wrap each one round the top wire circle and when done, repeat with the bottom. Now you have your formed shade, its time to give it some personality, I sprayed the entire shade and bulb cup with Gold Metallic spray paint by Rustoleum

Originally I thought I would fix some dowling inside the shade to act as perches, but I found the shade supports within the shade would do the job just as well

The birds cost £7.00 for 6 you can find them on Ebay, Amazon, just search clip on party birds..when picking out my feathered friends I came across Parrots, Doves and all manner of exotic birds, there’s so much choice out there.Or if birds are not your thing, you could use your wire shade as a form of notice board

Its kinda quirky, but I think it would be an interesting addition to a work space

I really had a lot of fun with this upcycle and whats more it saved me an absolute fortune £480 to be exact, bonkers isn’t it and the great thing about making your own and not buying off the shelf, is that you get to choose how you style/design it, you can create your own piece of art and say I did that, it really is so rewarding
