Cherry jam

I get buckets of Cherries every year from my Allotment plot, so I’m constantly devising new recipes to make use of them. This Cherry Jam is one of my favourite Jam recipes, rich, sweet and absolutely delicious and only 3 ingredients! There is something so satisfying about Homemade Jam, it is such a straightforward process and a much healthier alternative than store bought.

Reasons to make your own Jam

  • You Know what’s in it! – No nasty surprises or artificial preservatives
  • Pick your own – Whether your picking them from a bush or tree or selecting the finest on the supermarket shelf-you are the quality controller- fully in charge of the produce that goes into your Jam
  • The perfect Birthday/ Christmas gift– Is there a sweeter gift than homemade Jam? I love gifting jars to friends and family, its so much more personal than a toiletry set!
  • Preserve– If you grow your own Cherries or any other fruit like I do, Jam is a wonderful way to make your harvest last longer. A sealed jar of Jam will sit happily in the cupboard for up to a year
  • Rewarding! – I love watching my Children enjoy homemade Jam on toast for breakfast, seeing their little faces light up, is all the reward I need!
  • Easy – Just 3 Ingredients and a Pan!

How to make 3 Ingredient Homemade Cherry Jam

(Full recipe can be found at the recipe card at the end of this post)

Ingredients

  • Pitted Cherries
  • Jam Sugar
    • Why do I use Jam Sugar instead of regular Sugar?- Cherries contain low amounts of pectin, since we need pectin to make Cherry Jam set, I use Jam Sugar(which has added pectin)
  • Juice from 1 Lemon

Instructions

  • First put a saucer in the freezer (this is to test the jam is set later on)
  • Place the Lemon Juice, Pitted Cherries and Jam Sugar in a pan
  • Cook over a medium heat for around 35 minutes, stirring frequently until thick and glossy
  • After 35 minutes retrieve the plate from the freezer- spoon on a small amount and let it rest for a minute, gently push the jam with your fingertip. if it starts to wrinkle it’s done…if it doesn’t, it needs to cook a little longer
  • Pour into a sterile Jar while still hot, store for up to 1 year at room temperature

3 Ways to Sterilise Jars for Sauces and Preserves

Boil– Fill a pan with cold water until the jars are covered. Bring to the boil, then continue to boil for 10 minutes, turn the heat off, then cover the pan to keep the jars warm until you are ready to fill them.

Dishwasher-Remove any rubber seals and lids, place on the dishwasher rack and run a hot wash. Do not put any cleaning solutions in your dishwasher. Time your dishwasher to finish when you’re ready to fill the jars.

Oven-Heat oven to 140C. Wash the jars in hot, soapy water, rinse well. Place the jars on a baking tray and put them in the oven to dry completely. If using Kilner type jars, boil the rubber seals, do not put them in the oven, the dry heat will damage them.

Serving Suggestions for Cherry Jam

There are countless ways to include jam in your diet, here are just a few suggestions of how I eat mine.

  • Spread on Scones
  • Spread on toast
  • Swirl in Porridge
  • Add a dollop to Yoghurt
  • Peanut butter and Cherry Jam Sandwiches
  • Cheese and Cherry Jam Crackers
  • On French Toast see my Christmas French Toast Recipe

How to store Cherry Jam

Once opened, keep refrigerated and consume within 2 weeks. Un opened this Jam will keep for up to a year in the Cupboard. Use rubber sealed lids like mine (see pictures) or old sauce jars. Seal sauce jars with Wax Disks to ensure airtight storage.
