It was devoured by my lot in under 10 minutes, there was even a squabble over the last piece…if that’s not high praise, I don’t know what is! The secret is the fresh Orange zest, don’t be tempted to use Orange essence, the result will not be the same.
Tray Bake Cakes
If like me, you have a large family, you’ll know that small batch baking lasts all of five minutes! Tray bakes are a god send. Not just for large families but also for parties, gatherings, or for a lazy Sunday afternoon when all you feel like doing is stuffing your face and watching a movie!
This easy and substantial cake is the perfect easy bake for hungry tummy’s!

How to make Gooey Chocolate Orange Cake
(As always the full recipe and video is on the recipe card at the end of the post)
Ingredients
- Margarine or butter
- Caster sugar
- Eggs
- Milk
- Orange zest
- Self Raising Flour
- Cocoa powder
- Baking powder
For the Topping
- Icing Sugar
- Cocoa Powder
- Water
- Orange zest
- Orange segments
Instructions
- Pre-heat oven to 160°c
- Cream the margarine and sugar
- Add the eggs, orange zest & milk, mix well.
- Whisk in the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder.
- Line a 12 x 9 inch pan and spoon in the cake batter, smooth over and pop in the oven for 25-30 minutes. Allow to cool.
- To make the icing, mix the icing sugar, Cocoa powder and water together until you have a thick gloopy consistency. Spread over the cool cake, sprinkle with Orange Zest .
- Decorate with Orange/Tangerine segments.

How to Store Gooey Chocolate Orange Cake
Gooey Chocolate Orange Cake will keep for 4-5 days if stored at room temperature in an airtight container.
Want to freeze it? No problem, just wrap the cooled cake in cling film, pop it in a freezer bag for up to 3 months *If you intend to freeze the cake, do so un-iced. To decorate your Tray Bake Cake, thaw at room temperature, once defrosted, apply the Icing.

- 4-5 tbsp Water
- 1 tsp Orange zest
- 12 Orange segments
