This Chocolate Orange cake is moist, gooey, and just absolutely delicious! It was devoured by my lot in under 10 minutes, there was even a squabble over the last piece…if that’s not high praise, I don’t know what is! The secret is the fresh Orange zest, don’t be tempted to use Orange essence, the result will not be the same.
It took all my will power not to eat the batter out of the bowl!
The cake batter will be airy and cloud like, smooth out and pop in the oven for 25 minutes.
Allow the cake to cool completely before attempting to ice.
Spread the chocolate icing over the entire surface, sprinkle Orange zest on top, then allow to settle for a few minutes before cutting.
Decorate with orange segments and serve.

Chocolate Orange tray bake cake
- 230 g Margarine or butter
- 230 g Caster sugar
- 4 eggs
- 75 ml milk
- 4 tsp Orange zest
- 180 g self raising flour
- 50 g Cocoa powder
- 1/4 tsp Baking powder
- 250 g Icing Sugar
- 2 tbsp Cocoa Powder
- 4-5 tbsp Water
- 1 tsp Orange zest
- 12 Orange segments
Pre-heat oven to 160°c
Cream the margarine and sugar
Add the eggs, orange zest & milk, mix well.
Whisk in the flour, cocoa powder and baking powder.
Line a 12 x 9 inch pan and spoon in the cake batter, smooth over and pop in the oven for 25-30 minutes. Allow to cool.
To make the icing, mix the icing sugar and water together until you have a thick gloopy consistency. Spread over the cool cake, sprinkle with Orange Zest . Decorate with Orange segments.
