Growing Vegetables in Pots
This year I grew my Broccoli in pots. Almost every vegetable can be grown in a container as long as you have one large enough to accommodate it. This is an ideal solution for those of us with limited outdoor space. Great for yards & even balconies.

What you’ll need
A pot, some compost and a packet of seeds is all you need to start growing your own veg in pots. In some ways I actually prefer it, as I can control soil conditions…which in turn can then lead to a healthier crop.
How to Grow Broccoli
Sow Indoors
I start my Broccoli seeds indoors in spring (March-May), sow seeds 2cm deep in modules or pots on a Sunny Windowsill or Greenhouse.
Sow Outdoors
From April, sow Broccoli seeds in your chosen pot outdoors where they are to grow. Sow three seeds, 2cm deep, thin out to one seedling( keep the strongest one)
Grow
Once large enough, plant indoor sown seedlings outside, once the risk of frost has passed. Remember to harden off young plants off first.
What Does Hardening Off Mean?
Plants raised indoors or in a greenhouse environment, need to be acclimatised to cooler temperatures and increased air movement for about two to three weeks before they are planted outdoors permanently . This is a ‘toughening up’ practice to prepare the plants for their new environment.
How to Harden Off
Place your plants out for a couple of hours in a shady part of the garden. The next day, leave them out again for two hours, but this time allow the plants an hour of direct sunshine in the morning. Gradually continue to increase the length of time the plants are in direct sunshine over the course of roughly two weeks.
Where to Place Pot Grown Broccoli
Position Pot Grown Broccoli in full sun or very light shade.

Which Pot to use
Growing in a container did not inhibit my Broccoli growth at all ! As long as you can provide a pot that is a minimum of 12 inches deep, filled with a good quality compost, they are perfectly happy.
Caring For your Pot Grown Broccoli
- Broccoli grows best in well-drained, fertile soil. Cover newly planted Broccoli with fleece to deter Cabbage Root fly, remove mid may.
- Birds love a newly formed Broccoli Head! So its probably wise to net them to offer some protection.
- Water roughly every 10-14 days especially during dry weather
