Neckargold Beans Characteristics

Neckargold Beans are a yellow wax, French heirloom pole bean, semi-flattened with crunchy, slender, stringless 8-9″ pods. Succulent and Sweet in flavour. The vines are fast climbers reaching heights of up to 8 feet, so be sure to provide them with a structure to climb. A great Bean to grow in the UK as they will tolerate unfavourable and variable weather conditions.

How to Eat Neckargold Climbing Beans

Unlike Runner Beans, Climbing French beans tend to have smaller pods and are much more tender. Immature pods can be eaten whole, semi-mature pods can be shelled and the beans inside eaten, mature pods can also be shelled and the beans eaten fresh, or you could dry them and store over a longer period of time ( like kidney beans) Mature pods can also be sliced, baked, boiled ,grilled, fried !..chefs choice

Sow Indoors

On a Sunny Windowsill, sow 1 seed, 2cm deep in small pots or modules in late April or May. Cover with a propagator lid or cling film, germination should occur within 7-14 days.

Sow Outdoors

To Direct sow, wait until the soil has warmed up, Neckargold Beans will struggle to grow in cold soil( late April -May) Sow 1 seed, around 4cm deep and 40cm apart. Cover with soil and water well.

*If after sowing the weather takes a turn and goes too cold, cover the bed with horticultural fleece.

Tip- I recommend sowing French Beans indoors rather than direct sowing, much more reliable

Plant Out

After 2 – 3 weeks harden off the plants to prepare them for outdoor conditions. Plant out in a sunny Spot and provide them with a structure to climb.

What Does Hardening Off Mean?
Plants raised indoors or in a greenhouse environment, need to be acclimatised to cooler temperatures and increased air movement for about two to three weeks before they are planted outdoors permanently . This is a ‘toughening up’ practice to prepare the plants for their new environment.

How to Harden Off
Place your plants out for a couple of hours in a shady part of the garden. The next day, leave them out again for two hours, but this time allow the plants an hour of direct sunshine in the morning. Gradually continue to increase the length of time the plants are in direct sunshine over the course of roughly two weeks.
