This French Apple cake is a wonderful bake for a beginner baker. No technical knowledge needed and no fancy ingredients or tools required. If you have a mixing bowl, a whisk and a cake Pan…you’re good to go! I would say that this French Apple Cake is possibly the easiest cake you’ll ever make. It’s incredibly difficult to mess up! Simply mix the ingredients in a bowl, spoon into a cake pan and bake!

Which Apples Work Best with This recipe ?

I grow my own Apples on my Allotment, so normally I would just pick from my Apple Tree. But any Cooking or eating Apples from the Supermarket will work fine.

Types Of Apples

Pink Lady– Pink Lady apples are a very delicious apple, best known for their sweet and crisp flavour

Jazz-They have a Tangy-sweet flavour and a crisp texture.

Empire– A sweet, juicy Apple with a thick skin and hints of honey and apricot

Cox– Cox are famous for their juicy, firm flesh, often The Apple of Choice for pies!

Bramley-Bramley apples are a type of cooking apple, they are tart and juicy, perfect for Apple Crumbles

Gala– They are small, sweet, and juicy Red Skinned Apples with a crisp texture.

Golden Delicious– A Good allrounder! Flavourful and versatile, perfect for any recipe!

Granny Smith– Granny Smiths are tart and crisp, with a green skin

Do I Have To Put Rum in The Cake?

Rum is completely Optional, in fact it’s advisable to skip the Rum if you intend to serve this cake to children. You can use a non alcoholic alternative such as Cranberry Juice instead.

How To Make French Apple Cake

Ingredients

  • Plain Flour
  • Butter or Baking Margarine
  • Granulated sugar, plus extra for sprinkling on the Cake
  • Baking powder
  • Eggs
  • Vanilla extract
  • Salt
  • Dark rum or Cranberry Juice
  • Apples, peeled and cubed
  • Icing Sugar for dusting the Cake

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 180 C
  • Grease or line a 8-inch cake tin with baking paper
  • Peel and Chop The Apples into cubes, set aside
  • In a small bowl mix together the flour, baking powder and salt, set aside
  • Using an Electric mixer cream the butter and granulated sugar together in a large mixing bowl until fluffy
  • Next, add the eggs, one at a time the the creamed butter, continually mixing as you do.
  • Then add the vanilla and rum (Or Cranberry Juice). And mix In.
  • Add the flour mixture and mix until combined.
  • Finally fold in the Apple Chunks.
  • Spoon the Batter into the Prepared Baking tin and smooth out. Sprinkle with 1 tablespoon of Granulated sugar

  • Bake in The Centre of the Oven for 30 minutes or until a skewer come out clean. The Cake should be a golden Brown
  • Turn out onto a Cooling Rack, allow to cool completely before dusting with icing Sugar

Top Tips For A Successful French Apple Cake

  • Cream The butter or margarine and sugar until light and fluffy
  • Try Not to over mix the batter. An overworked batter can lead to a denser tougher cake
  • Select only the healthiest and Freshest Apples

How To Store French Apple Cake

Store in an Airtight Container or cover with Cling wrap at room temperature for 2-3 days. To Freeze, wrap with cling film, pop in a freezer bag and freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room temperature.
