A little iced tea History!
The first documented mention of Iced Tea, was back in 1823. Marguerite, Countess of Blessington, the wife of the Irish Earl Charles John Gardiner, 1st Earl of Blessington, wrote of her enjoyment of ‘sipping iced tea in Naples‘.
It wasn’t until the 1870’s that Iced Tea recipes began to be included in printed cookbooks. Two of which were The Buckeye Cookbook by Estelle Woods Wilcox, first published in 1876, and Housekeeping in Old Virginia by Marion Cabell Tyree (1878).
For the longest time, Iced tea was seen as a fad, a novelty! It wasn’t until 1904 that a chap named Richard Blechynden, a tea plantation owner and merchant, planned to give away samples of his hot tea to World’s Fair visitors…
However, the day arrived and so did the baking sun…way too hot for steaming tea, so Mr Blechynden dumped some ice in the pot and served it cold…it was a hit ! To this day it is still a very popular drink in America, they have now been drinking it for over a century!
