Just 6 Ingredients!

This delightfully naughty recipe is made with only Six ingredients: Butter, Sugar, Golden syrup, Rolled oats, Orange and of course….Chocolate (lots of it!) It yields 8 large slices or 16 smaller ones, it all depends on how generous your feeling! ;o) An Easy Flapjack recipe that even beginner bakers can master! Let’s Break It down…..

Butter

I am the kind of baker who likes to use up what I already have in the fridge so if I don’t have Unsalted butter to Hand i’ll use whatever I have in…and thats what happened today, I used salted Butter in this recipe and it was delicious! – You can of course use unsalted if you like. It doesn’t need to be room temperature either, straight from the fridge is fine… it’s going to be melted anyway.

Golden Syrup

Golden Syrup is a classic Flapjack ingredient us Brits love to use! However, you can always switch it out for Honey or Agave if you prefer

Sugar

I used granulated sugar but you could also use Caster Sugar, light brown sugar, dark brown Sugar or demerara sugar as a replacement

Rolled Oats

I used Rolled Oats otherwise known as Old Fashioned Oats, I find they produce a chewier, firmer flapjack…delicious! *I would not recommend instant oats for this recipe

Orange

I used orange zest from 1 whole large Orange in my recipe. Can You use Orange Extract? Of course! But bear in mind that Orange extract is more potent than zest, so alter the recipe accordingly…

Orange Zest vs Orange Extract -One teaspoon of orange zest is roughly the same flavour and strength as half a teaspoon of orange extract.

Chocolate

I used Cooking Milk Chocolate but you could use regular Milk chocolate if you like. You could even try Dark Chocolate, White Chocolate or a blend of the 2 for a marbled chocolate effect!

Why I used Cooking Chocolate For this Recipe? Cooking chocolate melts better than regular chocolate bars as it has a lower cocoa butter content. But if regular chocolate is all you have, it will work just fine! Just make sure to break it into small pieces before melting.

2 Ways To Melt Chocolate For Flapjacks

Double Boiler Method

Fill the bottom of a pan with water and place a glass pyrex bowl on top* Make sure the bottom of the bowl does not touch the water. Place the chocolate in the bowl and heat the pan of water over a medium-low flame, stir the chocolate continuously until melted and smooth.

Microwave Method

Place chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl at a low temperature and heat at 30-second intervals, stirring in-between until smooth. *Keep a close eye when using the microwave method, be mindful not to overheat it can ruin the chocolate

Get The Kids Involved!

Flapjacks are a wonderful bake to do with kids, let them measure out the ingredients and stir them all together. A sticky messy bake for curious mini bakers!
