Is Bread Difficult to make?
Bread has unfortunately gained the reputation of being difficult, but it really isn’t! The basic Ingredients in Bread are- Flour, Yeast, Salt and Water, the ‘difficulty’ people speak of, I think, alludes not to the technical skills needed to achieve a homemade Loaf, but the time requirements needed to bake it well.
I am of course talking about that perfect rise! Without the Rise, you can look forward to a flat unappealing loaf-really not ideal.
So, you have to put the time in!.. We’re not talking days here! Thanks to fast acting dry Yeast, the perfection of the rise can be achieved much quicker, a matter of hours is all that’s required.
More Haste, Less Speed
When I make bread, I take my time, I enjoy the process! Because the truth is, there is very little ‘hands on’ baking required.
This Recipe for example…The first stage takes 2-3 minutes to combine the ingredients, then 5 Minutes of Kneading, a few seconds to place in a proving bowl. Then you allow the dough to rise for 2 hours (I don’t even have to be in the house for that)
It then takes around 10 minutes to shape and cut the dough balls, 20 minutes for the second rise (Make a cup of tea!) Then Bake for 12-15 minutes. Easy!
The world we live in now is so fast paced, everything is either at the click of a button or the swipe of a debit card, too few people have the luxury of ‘time’ to make something as easily accessible as Bread .
But for me, Bread baking represents a slower way of living, the act of taking your foot off the accelerator, enjoying a process and bounty that is for once, not instant, but has to be earned!
Simplistic patient moments for wholesome rewards.
Why Homemade Bread is Better
- No Hidden Surprises-Homemade Bread contains no chemicals, artificial additives or preservatives. Shop bought Bread often contains these added extras to help the bread stay fresher for longer and enhance the flavours.

How To Make Crusty Artisan Dinner Rolls

Ingredients
- Strong White Bread Flour
- Salt
- Sachet Quick Action Yeast
- Warm water (Not hot. Hot water will kill the yeast)
Instructions
- With a wooden spoon mix together the bread flour, salt, and yeast.
- Add the Water, stir until combined
- Knead the dough on a floured surface for around 5 minutes until smooth and stretchy( If the dough feels a little too wet add sprinkles of flour until workable)
- Place the dough in an oiled bowl or proving bowl, cover and allow to rise for 2 hours, until doubled in size
- Cut The dough into 12-16 parts, sprinkle with flour. Form Dough balls by shaping each piece into a ball, do this by pulling the edges of the dough underneath, pinching the base to create a smooth top (see video below)
- Place the dough balls on a lined baking tray
- Preheat the oven to 220°c
- With a sharp knife or Bread Lame, carve a slit down the centre of each ball. Loosely cover the dough balls with cling film and allow them to puff up for 20 minutes
- Bake for 12-15 minutes, test they are baked by drumming on the base of the Roll, if they sound hollow, they’re done!
What is Artisan Bread?
Artisan Bread is not just one thing. Generally, it is simply a homemade, small batch, Crusty bread that has a Rustic appearance (Nailed it!) It is also known for being fuss free, no special tools or mixers required, a rough and tumble kind of bread that even beginner bakers can master! That is the Joy of this Recipe! Perfection is not required, in fact, it is best avoided. Perfection free= Authentically Rustic Artisan Bread! My kind of recipe!
How to store
Cover and store at room temperature for up to 3 days. To Freeze, wrap with cling wrap, pop in a freezer bag and Freeze for up to 3 months. Thaw at room Temperature.
Can you make ahead of time?
Absolutely! The day before, par bake the rolls (Bake for around 3-4 minutes less than the recipe has instructed, until a pale brown colour) On the day, pop them back in the oven for 3 minutes and serve.
